Reading challenge 2020

With the new year starting, bookworms around the world get ready to choose one of the many 2020 reading challenges online. Reading challenges are good to expand what we would normally read and creates a fun strategy to tackle our ever-growing TBR piles.

Reading books benefits both the physical and mental health. Research has demonstrated that reading involves complex activity within your brain. As your reading ability evolves, the brain becomes stronger and more sophisticated.

Brain scans showed that throughout the reading period and for days afterward, brain connectivity increased, especially in the somatosensory cortex, the part of the brain that responds to physical sensations like movement and pain.

In a world that needs this more than ever: Reading also helps you become more empathic; By exploring the lives of other characters the readers heightens his/her ability to undersand different points of view as well as their feelings and beliefs. This is called Theory of mind.

Because reading requires concentration, when suffering from a mental illness it may be a hard task to do. Reading just one sentence can take hours and one may not even fully understand it. Recently a new kind of therapy involving books has been created, named Bibliotherapy which is aimed for patients suffering from anxiety, depression, or other mood disorders; those struggling with trauma or addiction; or those going through grief, a divorce, or other relationship-related challenges.

If you feel like you’re having difficulty reading as you used to or just getting started try to be easy with yourself and start with 10 or 20 pages per day, reading a book you already love also helps you to keep back on track with more difficult and new books.
